The Board of Directors ensures Nursing Heart’s health and well-being by providing effective leadership and good governance. We are stewards of the Nursing Heart mission and hold the organization accountable to those we serve and to those who support us – through financial and legal oversight, the appointment of a capable Executive Director, and through an ongoing collaboration with the Executive Director to determine strategies and program priorities.

NHI Board Member Criteria

  • Passion/enthusiasm for our mission and our work in Guatemala
  • Positive attitude
  • Team player – works well in a group and is willing to set aside ego for the greater good
  • Ability to communicate clearly and articulately. Collaborative, mature, articulate, and respectful interaction with fellow Board members, the Executive Director, NHI staff, and program participants
  • Listens well; thoughtful in considering issues
  • Understands the importance of guarding the safety and security of staff and participants in the program
  • Sense of humor
  • Sees the forest for the trees; understands the big picture of aiming at extraordinary end results for those we serve
  • Understands the Nursing Heart mission as a whole, not just one component and understands the dual mission of serving communities and offering global healthcare experiences
  • Interested in leading and governing, rather than doing a portion of the day-to-day work of making the organization function
  • Willingness to make financial gifts to Nursing Heart Inc that are meaningful and significant to them.
  • Willingness to be an advocate, raise awareness, and funds for NHI
  • Willingness to commit time for Board meetings, committee meetings, planning sessions, special events

Desirable Experience and Skills Criteria

  • *Fundraising experience and networks to help raise visibility of Nursing Heart.
  • International/developing country exposure and/or work experience
  • Media/communications relations and skills
  • Monitoring/evaluation/research experience
